My art includes expressions of conflicts I experienced as a result of my removal and loss of Aboriginal identity before the age of two. Other images I've produced go beyond this, to the broader societal experience of Aboriginal people both past and present.

I feel that I always channel the strength of my Connection to Our Land, Spirituality, Identity and Aboriginality.

The inspiration for this artwork was a blind Aboriginal friend of mine, revealed to me that he had no concept of Aboriginal Symbolism and Art. I initially created a piece for him as a gift, he loved it. It opened up insight, understanding and new avenues of access to his own Aboriginal Identity. From this I developed the idea of creating story cards as a way of giving some form of access to Aboriginal culture for the sight impaired.

"Cobar Hunting Grounds of The Wongaibon People", represents my People and my Country as an Aboriginal Woman born in Cobar and descending from the Wongaibon and Wiradjuri people, I am sharing some of my Culture and my Ancestry with you. The images are made from crushed ochre I have personally gathered it from the Cobar region and crushed and mixed the Ochre (which is how my ancestors made their paint for rock art and body preparation for ceremonies). Grandmother Teaching Grandaughter
    Helen Moran  Acrylic On Canvas
    976 x 1300   2002

The concept for this piece comes from several things. First, Cobar is Wongaibon Land, the Land of my Ancestors. Second, it is my birthplace and a place where Grandmothers taught the Grandchildren aspects of their Culture, Kinship and Lore through Rock Art. The hand prints of family members played an important role in these teachings about the Family Tree. As the returning Spirit of the Stolen Granchild to her Homelands, her Grandmother's Spirit returns to pass on the teachings and knowledge denied her Grandaughter who was stolen as a baby.
